Workshop

Transforming Information into Knowledge
In the context of Postcapital Archive

July 10 – 13, 2008
Venue: Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart

From November 2008 to January 2009 the Württembergischer Kunstverein will be presenting Daniel García Andújar’s project Postcapital Archive. The project is based on a digital archive—comprised of over 250,000 files (texts, audio files, videos, etc.) compiled via the Internet through various search machines—focusing on the backgrounds and effects of the “postcapital” era. This era is defined as spanning between the fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and 9/11 (2001). The archive comprises highly diverse materials, such as publications, lectures, interviews with leftist theorists, documents from the Cold War period, materials by activists, representations of terrorism, and much more.

At the same time, Postcapital Archive views itself as an ongoing process for reflecting and practicing participatory ways of knowledge production, and of collaborative communication formats (whether printed or audiovisual media, exhibitions or workshops). In this context, today’s information politics—ranging from open-source attitudes to new laws for intellectual property, as well as new forms of censorship—prove to be as important for discussion as do questions of representation.

Postcapital Archive will be presented in Stuttgart in the form of an open archive, bringing into play various materials chosen from the digital archive by Daniel García Andújar. At the same time, the Postcapital Archive – in terms of its digital files as well as its structure – can be used by the public and by a number of guests/collaborators both as a tool and as a platform (or “theater”) of activities.

In this regard, a three-day workshop will be held in July at the Akademie Schloss Solitude. The conception involves presenting the concept and idea behind the Postcapital Archive project while, at the same time, reflecting on possibilities for collaboration in the exhibition context: be it as a dialogue with or interpretation of the Postcapital Archive materials, or in the form of contributions (lectures, workshops, screenings, presentations, performances, etc.) related to subjects such as “postcapital conditions” (markets, politics, activism, municipal planning, migration, globalization, terrorism, etc.), collaborative practices of knowledge production, archivization, censorship, copyrighting, and so forth.

The workshop is open for everyone interested in the areas of visual and performing arts, design, architecture, city planing, visual communication, media and culture sciences, and activism.
