After the successful start in 2015, there will be another artist exchange between Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia this year.
The exchange scholarship, initiated on the initiative of the Goethe-Institut Barcelona, the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg, the Württembergischer Kunstverein and the Hangar Art Center, Barcelona, is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg and the Catalan Government.

Since 2015, the Württembergischer Kunstverein, the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the Kunstzentrum Hangar in Barcelona have been working together within the framework of an exchange of scholarships between Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia.

The aim of these scholarships is to promote exchange between the art scenes in Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia. Different artistic approaches, backgrounds and production methods should enter into dialogue and enrich each other. The aim is a long-term cooperation that goes beyond the artist scholarships mentioned here.

The scholarschips are advertised for travel, stay and production in order to

- to support the development of artistic works in the context of the institutions involved
- promote interregional exchanges between artists in Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia
- to facilitate dialogue between two artistic communities and their respective social groups

1. To whom are the scholarships addressed
Artists of all ages and nationalities who live and work in Baden-Württemberg and Catalonia and present an artistic project. A university degree or comparable qualification is required. This project can be located in all areas of contemporary art (performance, sound art, visual arts, new media, etc.).

2. Duration
The stay in Stuttgart will be 8 weeks in August and September 2020 (Please note, dates updated). In Barcelona the exchange will take place from September to October 2020. The selected artists will have the opportunity during their stay in the respective artist centres of the respective city to exchange ideas with the local artists who have had or will have the residence in the other city.

3. Benefits of the scholarship
The scholarship holders from Baden-Württemberg receive (less any taxes and levies):

- 1.800,00 € maintenance costs for the 8-week stay
- production cost subsidy
- Participation in outward and return travel costs
- Workroom / Studio
- Use of the infrastructures of the participating centre
- Selective technical assistance. If the project requires the use of a full-time employee for technical assistance, this assistance will be charged to the production cost grant.

The scholarship does not include health insurance. Each scholarship holder is obliged to take out valid health insurance in his/her home country or place of residence for the duration of his/her stay.

4 Conditions
1. the application shall be made using an online form.
2 Each applicant can only apply with one project.
3 The selected artists are required to maintain active contact with the artists living in the host country during their stay in the host country.

5. Obligations of the scholarship holders

The selected artists commit themselves:

- Participate in public presentations of the project during their stay.
- To draw up a final report on the project and, within two months of their return, an evaluation of their stay.
- Present the results at the end of the stay. The location of the presentation depends on the type of project, it can be the Goethe-Institut or a cooperating museum in Barcelona, the Württembergische Kunstverein in Stuttgart or another suitable location in both cities.
- To indicate the logos of the participating institutions in all publications relating to the work of art.

Applications are submitted online and in English.

7. Application deadline

8. Selection process
The preselection of the Baden-Württemberg artist will take place in May 2020. The artist selected there must present a registration certificate showing his/her place of residence in Baden-Württemberg. The selection procedure is based on the guidelines laid down by the respective centre for awarding scholarships. The decision will be announced in the end of June 2020.

9. Selection criteria
It's being evaluated:

- Whether the artistic project is socially relevant in the context of the orientation of the respective artist centre in which the residence is to take place.
- Whether the artistic project can redeem the planned theme.
- Whether the artistic project can be realised within the given time and within the available possibilities of the art centers.
- Whether the artistic project is transferable, i.e. the applicability and communication ability of the results to other contexts or persons.
- Whether the artistic project can also involve the existing networks of artist centres and participating institutions.
- Whether the stay can achieve the artistic, cultural and social impact desired by the participating institutions.

10. Recognition of the basic principles and the decision of the jury
Participation in the call for entries implies recognition of the principles and decisions of the jury, as well as of any changes that may be made due to external factors beyond the control of the centres.

Scholarship location for artists from Baden-Württemberg

The Hangar Art Centre in Barcelona is dedicated to artistic research and production. It supports artists from the fields of fine arts, performance, sound art and new media in the various phases of artistic creation and offers a suitable framework for artistic experimentation through the provision of equipment, premises and production support. The art centre is located in the Can Ricart building complex in the industrial district of Poblenou in Barcelona. The area with the adjacent warehouses covers 2,600m2 and offers many opportunities for creative work. The buildings include artists' studios, multifunctional workspaces, a production room and multifunctional rooms in which work can be carried out with images, sound and music. Hangar also develops its own research projects and organises events and workshops.

Würrtembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart
Scholarship location for artists from Catalonia

Founded in 1827, the Württembergische Kunstverein Stuttgart, with its approximately 2,500 members and an exhibition and event area of over 1,500 square meters, is one of the largest art associations. It sees itself as a place of open and participatory engagement with the diverse practices of international contemporary art - and its far-reaching socio-political fields of reference. The WKV works on the basis of both locally and internationally anchored, transcultural and transdisciplinary networks. The apartments and studios of the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart are located in the studio building of the Kunstverein in the "Schellenkönig".

Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg
Scholarship location for artists from Catalonia

The Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg is an institution for the promotion of the young contemporary art scene in Baden-Württemberg. Its aim is to provide aspiring talents who have spent their first place of residence, their main field of work or a substantial part of their biography in Baden-Württemberg, which is decisive for their artistic work, with financial independence and freedom for a limited period of time in order to be able to further develop their work. Since its foundation in 1977, the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg has supported over 900 artists and cultural workers in various fields (visual and performing arts, music, literature, art criticism and cultural management). As an independent and non-profit institution, it has developed into one of the most important institutions for the experimental cultural scene in the country. Founded in 2009, the Art Office of the Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg also offers a wide-ranging consulting and further education program for visual artists.

Goethe-Institut Barcelona
The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany that operates worldwide. It promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and fosters international cultural cooperation. In addition, it conveys a comprehensive picture of Germany through information about cultural, social and political life. It works on the basis of equal dialogue and cooperates with a number of cultural organisations to facilitate a broad spectrum of cultural events.
