Housing All
curated and moderated by Anna Schieder and Matteo Locci

A point of view on the bottom-up transformations in the city of Rome starting from the different experiences of popular education of yesterday and today: informal schools that are born to contrast educational poverty and to offer opportunities for social, cultural and political empowerment for those who are marginalized, often migrant, and live on the edge of the city, often invisible and forgotten.

Giulia Fiocca
Architect, independent researcher and activist on urban and social transformation focusing on the marginal realities and communities, informal urbanism and self-organised social and cultural practices. Giulia Fiocca is a permanent member of the collective Stalker, a collective of architects and researchers who came together in the mid-1990s. Stalker have developed a specific methodology of urban research using participative tools and a method of collective walking throughout the so called “actual territories”.

Anna Schiefer
Anna Schiefer is an artist and based in Stuttgart. She is founding member of the publishing house for handbooks (Verlag für Handbücher) and is currently a researcher at the art academy in Stuttgart. Her research is located between the performing and the visual arts focusing on usable objects and how around these social structures and subjectivities are formed. Anna Schiefer has been working in public programming at the Württembergischer Kunstverein since 2011.

Matteo Locci
Matteo Locci is a multimedia artist and a critical conjurer with an architectural background.
He recently completed his Diplôme Supérieur de Recherche en Art at the Ecole européenne supérieure de l'image and most of his research is carried out with and thanks to the interdisciplinary collective ATI suffix from Rome. Sitting at the intersections of popular history and art his work highlights the ways by which attention is triggered, produced, circulates, and disappears in the neoliberal participatory governance.

On the event series
Housing All
is a series of conversations investigating the lingering housing crisis in the city of Rome as a complex web where agencies of governance, activism, communities and artists have historically been entangled. The housing question is a battleground where public responsibilities and issues of publicness are acted out in the most private and vulnerable spaces. Diverse forms of public engagement developed important instances of sharing and rediscovered the collective and communal dimension of the city. Artist, architect and activist groups develop strategies of urban research and fight for inclusive policies while protecting 70 house occupations that are scattered throughout the Italian capital. Housing all maps fragments of these diverse and fluid networks in three online conversations.

The title of the series alludes to Savorengo Ker ("the home of everyone" in Romanes), an experimental project of collaborative building that took place in Rome in the Rom*nja camp of Casilino 900 coordinated and conceived in 2008 by the interdisciplinary collective Stalker / Osservatorio Nomade. A documentation of the project is currently part of the closed exhibition Actually, the Dead Are Not Dead: Una forma de ser curated by Pedro G. Romero and María García Ruiz.

Watch the documentary Once Upon a Time there was Savorengo Ker, the Home of Everyone here.

Housing All is curated by the Stuttgart artist Anna Schiefer and Roman architect Matteo Locci
