Trinh T. Minh-ha. The Ocean In A Drop

KITCHEN TABLE TALKS

Thursday, January 19, 2023, 7 p.m.

Conversation with artist and filmmaker Filipa César
About the postcolonial approaches in Trinh T. Minh-ha's films, poetic and theoretical writings.
Moderation: Yara Richter

We will discuss Trinh’s work through her text 'Acoustic Journey' (1996) which was first published in John C. Welchman’s Rethinking Borders (1996). In this text, Trinh interrogates links between refuge and refusal, return and receptivity. She inquires into what happens at the border, the in-between, and in processes of transgression, in the context of forced migratory movements during the 1980s. Trinh then examines parallels to how music is performed and experienced, and the role that movement in/with the 'other' play in those situations of resonance.

Conversation with Peter Erasmus
About the Future of cinema & museum

Trinh T. Minh-ha's exhibition softens the boundaries between cinema and exhibition space, raising questions about the relevance and future of both spaces. Together we will discuss the extent to which the institutions of cinema and exhibition space change through hybrid formats but also through digital services like streaming services and digital exhibitions, and what potential these changes represent for new formats.

The Ocean in a Drop
Moderated by Mira Simon

This evening we invite you to an open exchange about your experience with the films of Trinh T. Minh-ha in our exhibition The Ocean In A Drop. We are eager to learn: How do you experience the parallel projection of the six films in the exhibition space? What impressions are conveyed by the partial, fragmentary viewing? Do you find it enriching or overwhelming? Or does it result in entirely new perspectives on film, cinema and exhibition? How do you experience the polyphony of Trinh T. Minh-ha's films? And how her approach of "speaking nearby"? Can theory and practice, writing, image and sound be brought together? Has the exhibition possibly triggered questions and issues that you would like to share and discuss in the round? The evening will be moderated by art educator Mira Simon. The bar is open on a donation basis. You are welcome to bring your own snacks and food for the Kitchen Table.
