Calamity Jane & Delphine Seyrig – A Story follows Delphine Seyrig's research into a film about Martha Jane Cannary, or more famously known as Calamity Jane, the infamous & wild frontierswoman, from the Wild West.
Fascinated by letters allegedly written by Calamity Jane to her daughter, Seyrig embarked on a journey, along with cinematographer Babette Mangolte, to learn more about Calamity Jane through conversations with Jane's supposed daughter, Jean McCormick.
A script that Seyrig wrote with Lebanese artist and poet Etel Adnan is on display in Defiant Muses. Delphine Seyrig and the feminist video collectives of 1970s and 1980s France. This film offers a multifaceted example of women in filmmaking, telling the important stories of women throughout history.
Following the viewing we will be discussing the role of women in filmmaking, gender roles in frontiers time, Calamity Jane's connection with her daughter, motherhood, and intercultural aspects of feminism and feminist filmmaking.
