On feminist and ecological approaches to curating and to institutional transformation processes
Moderation: Iris Dressler
Language: English

Aneta Rostkowska directs the CCA Temporary Gallery in Cologne since 2019. Here, she has established a program shaped by intersectional feminist as well as ecological questions and ways of thinking. Sustainability, inclusion, feminist and postcolonial positions or non-normative ways of life are not only reflected as contents of exhibitions and events, but also as approaches for institutional transformation processes.

For example, the cross-institutional project Islands of Kinship, in which her institution is involved, is, among other things, concerned with transforming the practical functioning of the participating art institutions. “We are seeking both imaginative models and practical solutions to help us employ new strategies of togetherness, fairness, responsibility and kindness, responding to the current global environmental, political and socio-economic challenges through specific artistic visions.” The question of the re/distribution of power, knowledge, visibility and resources is at the forefront. The seminar Towards Perma-Cultural Institutions: Exercises in Collective Thinking (organized in July 2022 together with Stiftung Künstlerdorf Schöppingen and co-curated with Julia Haarmann and Nada Rosa Schoer) attempted to rethink art institutions on the basis of ecological approaches, especially permaculture.

Plants and their forms of propagation, wild growth, and gardens as places of care –rather than of cultivation – are issues of exhibitions, but also serve Rostkowska as metaphors of alternative institutional practices. Not least, the members of the Temporary Gallery are addressed as gardeners.
