Aline Xavier Mineiro brings a selection of short films and an ongoing process of a video-installation. The works will be introduced by the artist and were gathered as they can all be seen as transient memorials, bringing awareness to overlooked stories.

Casa Aparecida
2016, 4', Digital Video, OmeU
The video documents the process of the dislocation of Aparecida Marcelino’s flooded home from Mariana, Brazil, where a mining dam burst causing deaths, displacing hundreds of families, and is described as Brazil’s worst environmental disaster. As an act of memory work the ruins of the house were transported and rebuilt in Museum spaces.

Archival documents about the slave ship Amersfoort (1658) found in the Dutch National Archive, are reinterpreted in a video in memory of the Angolan people who lost their lives on the ocean between the coast of Baía de Todos os Santos, Brazil, and the Cape of Good Hope, in South Africa.

A short essay filmed while researching the colonial archive of the Langsdorff Expedition (1822) in the Russian Academy of Sciences. The Langsdorff Expedition is one of the greatest scientific expeditions of its kind. It was led by the German doctor and naturalist G.I. Langsdorff, and gathered a group of artists and scientists that traveled through Brazil from Rio de Janeiro to the Amazon. The explorers went through more than sixteen thousand kilometers, making records of the most varied aspects of its nature and society, constituting the most complete inventory of Brazil. Drawings, maps, herbariums, taxidermied animals, documents and journals are some of the remains of this endeavor.

The images documented during different childbirths show the wait of mothers and their act of cutting their own umbilical cord after their babies are born. Since modern times, Western medicine has reserved for men the role of cutting the umbilical cord after childbirth. When women regain agency over such a symbolic act, multiple interpretations and questions are provoked, and the gesture of cutting the umbilical cord can also be seen as a form of resistance and transformation.

SHORT BIO
Aline Xavier Mineiro is an artist and filmmaker born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Her works are often a result of her immersion in different cultural contexts, being it in Brazil or in other territories of the Global South. Nature, the history of sciences, the politics of image-making, personal and collective memory, are starting points to her work.
She has received significant awards including the Videobrasil Art Prize and the Prêmio Foco ArtRio; she also has participated in various art residencies, such as the Akademie Schloss Solitude (Germany), Kooshk Residency (Iran), Sacatar (Brazil), and in workshops such as the Berlinale Talents (Germany/ Argentina) and the Flaherty Seminar (US).
Her works were have been exhibited in the Centre Pompidou, France; Kunstverein Wagenhalle, Stuttgart, Germany; Kunsthal KAdE, Netherlands; A4 Arts Foundation, Johannesburg Art fair and Zeitz Museum, South Africa; Inhotim art Center, MAR - Museu de Arte do Rio, Solar dos Abacaxis, Oi Futuro Flamengo, Museu de Arte da Pampulha, Mostra de Cinema de Tiradentes, Centro Cultural São Paulo, Brazil; among others.
