200 Years of the Present. Constellation 3: Exhibition of the Artist Members of the WKV

2027 marks the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Württembergischer Kunstverein (WKV). In the run-up to the bicentenary, the WKV is undertaking a two-year open process to examine three central ideas that are closely interwoven with the founding of German Kunstvereine (art associations) at the beginning of the nineteenth century from a contemporary perspective: the constitution of the (white, male) citizen as sovereign; the freedom of art; and nation building. A series of exhibitions is planned that reflects within four constellations possible connections between past, present, and future. 

The third constellation in the series takes place in the form of this year's exhibition by artist members of the WKV, whose call for submissions addressed the themes of 200 years of the WKV's presence. Over 200 contributions were submitted, reflecting in a variety of ways on the history, present, and future of the WKV and art associations, as well as the associated socio-political contexts. Some of the works are based on research into historical figures, artists, exhibitions, or locations of the WKV; others reflect personal connections to the institution. General questions about freedom and the freedom of art are also addressed from different perspectives and in different aesthetic forms—not only in relation to the founding years, but above all to the present day.

The exhibition of works by WKV artist members takes place every two years and is organized around a new theme each time. The aim is always to show all submissions, as far as space allows. This year's exhibition therefore once again provides insights into the extraordinary diversity of artistic approaches and practices among WKV members.

The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive supporting program, which is also based on suggestions from the members.
