This publication is intended as a documentation of the project The Beast and the Sovereign–that is, of the two slightly different 2015 exhibitions at the MACBA Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona and at the Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart -, as a deepening of the content and theory of a selection of thematic fields that were relevant to the project, and as a reflection on the censorship case that was inextricably linked to this project. It is also a reflection on the case of censorship that is indissolubly linked to this project: a reflection that in this book reflects the point of view of the artist concerned and the curators of the MACBA and the Württembergischer Kunstverein who were responsible at the time. By analyzing the conflict that our exhibition triggered - and which has become deeply inscribed in it–our concern is to initiate a critical examination of the situation of public art institutions at that time, but above all also of the situation today.

Textiles that traversed the world long before today's globalization can tell us about the consequences of colonialist policies. Loomshuttles, Warpaths is a debauched exploration of textiles and their globe-spanning history, marked by cultural, class, and gender conflicts. The book illuminates the highly complex and asymmetrical relationship between Europe and Latin America through textiles from the Andes. A unique textile tradition developed there over thousands of years and still determines all levels of life today.

The illustrated book is published in conjunction with the exhibition Alexander Kluge. Gardens of Cooperation at Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart: a comprehensive solo exhibition of the writer, filmmaker and theorist Alexander Kluge, based on the show of the same name at the art center La Virreina in Barcelona. In close collaboration with La Virreina as well as Alexander Kluge himself, the Kunstverein has developed a new version and expansion of seven aspects of this project.
In accordance with the exhibition, the book is also composed of seven "islands," each of which is introduced with an image and text from Alexander Kluge's books. In addition, it brings together a selection of supplementary texts by Alexander Kluge, which were also part of the exhibition.
